What is Pilates?

The renowned Joseph Pilates (1883-1967) was a passionate advocate for exercise and movement to heal, and to maintain health for the duration of our lives! He devised a system of understanding human movement with a set of physical strengthening exercises he recommended, and this was known as the Pilates Method. These exercises exemplified his Principles of movement: alignment, articulation, breathing, concentration, core strength (‘centering’), and controlled, flowing movement. He emphasised the role of the smaller muscles in the body, conditioning them to work with the larger muscle groups to build good posture, functional stability and strength. Over time and with regular practice, the Pilates Principles are integrated into our movement habits – and so in turn we gain a greater sense of energy, empowerment and wellness.
Pilates is now a world-wide research-led movement, which continues to grow and develop under the umbrella of professional teaching bodies, codes, and associations. Qualified Pilates teachers have good understanding of human movement patterns, and can expertly use manual, visual and verbal cues to help each client improve the quality of their movement and work towards their goals.
